The Work Health and Safety (WHS) Committee Course is designed to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to actively contribute to workplace health and safety as members of a safety committee. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of legislative requirements, consultation processes, and effective communication strategies within the context of workplace safety.

Throughout the course, participants will explore key concepts such as the primary duty of care, the role and responsibilities of safety committee members, and the functions and powers of health and safety representatives.   • Understand the key provisions of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and its impact on workplace safety, including recognising the primary duty of care employers have towards ensuring the health and safety of their workers.
  • Analyse and apply legislative concepts and principles through Case Studies.
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of health and safety representatives (HSRs).
  • Explore consultative mechanisms in the workplace.
  • Understand the concept of refusal to work and its implications.
  • Identify strategies for resolving workplace issues effectively.
  • Understand the role and powers of inspectors under the WHS Act 2020.
  • Understand the penalties associated with non-compliance with WHS legislation.
  • Understand the role and functions of the safety committee in the workplace.
  • Recognise the legislative requirements for consultation and cooperation, including ensuring accessibility and availability of WHS information.
  • Consider and address matters referred by health and safety representatives.
  • Follow committee procedures for effective operation and decision-making.
  • Understand the composition and roles within the safety committee, including the chairperson and secretary.
  • Develop and maintain accurate minutes of safety committee meetings.
  • Apply strategies and manage change and conflict effectively in the workplace.
  • Understand the communication process and its importance in the workplace, including recognising barriers to effective communication and addressing them in the workplace.
  • Understand and apply the concept and principles of negotiation and its application in workplace situations.
  • Develop action plans for implementing workplace improvements.
