This Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) course is designed for individuals seeks to enter the heavy vehicle (HV) industry without holding a current HV driver’s license. It is ideal for those looking to understand the industry, gain practical exposure, and build foundational safety knowledge before progressing to formal licensing.
Delivered over two in-class days, the course provides an introductory overview of the road transport and heavy vehicle industry in Australia, with a particular focus on civil construction site operations and on-road heavy vehicle safety. Participants will learn about the HV industry, the hazards and risks associated with operating heavy vehicles, the hazards and risks of the road network, and the hazards and risks of other road users.
Course content:
- Overview of the Australian heavy vehicle (HV) industry, including key regulations, relevant authorities, and its role within the transport and civil sectors
- Identification and management of hazards and risks associated with HV driving, including situational awareness and appropriate response techniques
- Understanding Australia’s road network and relevant regulations, including how to navigate key routes and where to access further guidance and support
- The impact of varying weather conditions on HV operations, associated risks, and effective control measures to reduce risk as far as reasonably practicable
- Awareness of high-risk environments such as busy civil construction sites, including hazard identification and implementation of risk control strategies
- Considerations for engaging with workers from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, including inclusive communication and coordination techniques
- The purpose and importance of pre-start checks, including how to complete them and their relevance to overall workplace safety
- Understanding workplace fatigue, its effects on safety, and techniques for managing and reducing fatigue-related risks
- The importance of movement breaks and physical activity for safe driving, with examples of practices that support driver wellbeing
- Awareness of psychosocial hazards in isolated work environments and strategies to support mental health and reduce associated risks
- Conducting a basic HV inspection in a safe and methodical manner
- Introduction to the heavy vehicle simulator, including basic operation and principles of use
Participants who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment.
This course covers three Units of Competency:
TLIB0002 Carry out vehicle inspection
TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures
Assessments are conducted in the classroom and reviewed after the training. Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment. This certification is nationally recognised.
